- THE VERDICT
Gotham, from Rome and The Mentalist's Bruno Heller, kicked things off with a basic, somewhat bland, crime story filled with a few too many dog ears. Though I also understand the show's need to sell as many Batman-y elements as it can right out of the gate, considering that it'll never have the big, main ingredient people want. The story-telling almost gets hampered by the brand itself. And the sheer amount of "they all knew each other at one point" coincidences might turn some folks off.
Still, Gotham does work when it spins in the opposite direction and strays from what we've become too familiar with. Cobblepot is a delicious wild card, Fish Mooney is a fun addition, and Alfred is joyfully uncouth. David Mazouz's young Bruce is appropriately mature while Camren Bicondova's Selina Kyle hops around rooftops, spying on his trauma. On the flip side, I felt like an "everyman" approach to Gordon would have served that character better than the intensity seen here.
The biggest challenge for Gotham just might be whether or not all these relationships, told in long form, will wind up being more effective -- or at least as effective -- as what other filmmakers were able to achieve with just a few flashbacks. http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/08/21/gotham-pilot-review

- Ultimately, what we have in the first episode of Gotham is a series in the process of painting a great world that, in the future, is surely going to deliver on some thrills, but it does ask a bit much of the audience for the first time out without offering up anything truly exciting in exchange. One of television’s biggest advantages over film is that it can world build a little at a time, something writer Bruno Heller appears to have forgotten. It’s clear Gotham’s trying to do something different with the Batman canon, but it will need to do a better job with its execution in the future to keep people intrigued.

- Although enjoyable, Gotham is by no means a perfect pilot. It’s full of “Look who it is!” fan service, though your reaction to these scenes is dependent on how integrated you are within the DC universe. It does a solid job introducing the world to people who have never heard of it, or have only heard villains’ names in passing (a sample exchange: “Take it easy, Penguin!” “You know I don’t like to be called that”), with not-too-subtle glimpses at characters like Poison Ivy and Selina Kyle, but it can cause a few groans from viewers. I only consider myself a casual Batman fan — I’ve viewed all of the movies and read the more essential graphic novels, but would be totally schooled in a trivia contest — and even I found myself rolling my eyes at the constant winking to the audience.

- The pilot itself is among the best you'll see this fall. It looks great, the two leads have instant chemistry, and everything hums along nicely as a slightly larger-than-life crime saga. (John Doman from "The Wire" is terrific as local kingpin Carmine Falcone.) And the show does very well a recreating the one famous Batman sequence it's allowed to use, with the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne and its immediate aftermath. (Mazouz, who had a largely silent role as Kiefer Sutherland's son on "Touch," has a very loud and powerful reaction to the crime.) What's in the first hour is more than enough to keep me watching for a while (and writing about the show each week, at least in the early going).

- The noir story of cops investigating organized crime in a deteriorating city is top-notch, thanks especially to strong performances by Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith and others. Of the more colorful criminals, Robin Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot (aka, the Penguin) is the standout.
I still have a few reservations about the series that will follow this solid pilot. Is this the story of cops like Gordon taking on the losing fight in Gotham City? Or is it simply the origins of the Batman world? The pilot makes both possibilities equally likely, meaning that it’s hard to guess what sort of show Gotham will be in the long run.
It’s a good start though. And it will be interesting to see what follows. http://www.docbrowntv.com/gotham-review-excellence-despite-expectations/
