- O.M.A.C. #1 – In my years of attending comic book conventions and talking to hardcore fans, I have noticed one universal constant. If you say the name “Kirby”, you will see a giant sized, child like grin appear. Jack Kirby’s art style launched a thousand imaginations and even today, amid millions of comic books world wide, is unmistakable. It is with a love for this style and an almost mischievous desire to send us hurtling back to our youth that DC Comics allowed a book like O.M.A.C. be made and exist in the same core universe as your favorite heroes. This comic is INSANELY fun. If the art style itself doesn’t have you dorking out immediately, then the content will surely knock you out of your seat, or at least force you to draw attention to yourself as you attempt to read quietly on the train. Yes…they have invented a comic that forces your geek to the surface for all to see. Beware. Dan DiDio recently described the title character as a “Techo Hulk” and I couldn’t think of a more perfect description. When Brother Eye sets this raging monster with the glowing Mohawk on a target, things get pummeled very quickly. When they target is Cadmus, prepare for some resistance. This book is loud, striking, ridiculous, retro and hysterical all at once. I can’t think of a comic more ready to be turned into an 8 bit side scrolling video game. I’m in 100%.
Note: Since O.M.A.C. exists in the core universe, we may see other heroes pop up in the pages. Who would YOU like to see Kirby-tized??!! http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/09/06/review-the-new-52-so-far-by-paul-nomad/

Jack Kirby didn’t just bring a sense of wonder to his world. He also excelled at a certain skeeviness. A feeling of something nasty under the skin just scratching to get out, which he brought to the fore in his Fourth World books. And that feeling is right here, literally even, when faces are peeled back to reveal weapons, the skin still stretched around them.
This battle royale surrounded by office politics. Where a super being fight has become something monstrous, but corporate. Where commercial espionage sees the summoning of inhumane creatures and perfects the art of showing maximum power in the hands of someone that shouldn’t have anything close to it, no matter how big they are. With Giffen’s expert hands, there are some truly Kirby moments that one would think the big man might be proud of.
I’ve never really warmed to Dan DiDio’s writing before, but I can feel myself thawing with this. It’s fun, odd, exciting and bewildering.
And of all this week’s DC books, this will be the one I’ll be rereading over and over… if only so I can work out the intricacies of what was going on. If there are any.
A lot of people aren’t going to like it though. Will you be one? http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/09/06/tuesday-comics-reviews-stormwatch-batgirl-batwing-animal-man-detective-comics-action-comics-men-of-war-swamp-thing-jli-green-arrow-omac-hawk-dove-static-shock/

Oh yes. Deliriously nutty, colourful and intensely visual, O.M.A.C. is the most deliberate pastiche to Jack Kirby that I’ve seen for a while, and is also a tremendous amount of fun. Perfectly capturing the Kirby mix of energy, fizz and out-of-nowhere strangeness, this updated, retooled version of the O.M.A.C. concept packs in a tremendous amount of action, while the art (by both Giffen and DiDio) pulls off ludicrous visuals with tremendous style. It’s hard to know what non Kirby-fans will think of this, but the mix of sheer comic book pizzazz is so giddy that hopefully others will be swept along by O.M.A.C.’s infectiously lurid insanity. One of the most deliberately loopy of the new DC titles, and also one of the most enjoyable, O.M.A.C. is a must-read for any lovers of comic-book strangeness. http://www.schizopolitan.com/comics-review-the-dc-new-52-week-2-action-comics-animal-man-batgirl-batwing-detective-comics-green-arrow-hawk-and-dove-justice-league-international-men-of-war-o-m-a-c-static-shock-stormwatch-swamp-thi/
