- Spoiler:
Ignore this User | Report Abuse The movie begins with a retelling of the destruction of planet Krypton. We are introduced to General Zod, Ursa, Jor-El, and Lara, as well as baby Kal-El. Mention is made of Brainiac, while Zod and Ursa are sentenced to the Phantom Zone. Jor-El laments the fact that his world accomplished "miracles no one will remember" while he is busy preparing infant Kal-El's voyage. Kal-El's shuttle pod fires into space moments before the planet's destruction. Jor-El and his wife Lara regret that they will never know if Kal-El survives the journey.
Lex has a satellite test for LexCorp, Luthor is overseeing the test himself, paying much attention to the trajectory of the satelites. Luthor causes one of the satelite cameras to detach from others, and ends up releasing into space, causing panic for all except Lex. The satelite flying through space, crashes into the phantom zone, releasing General Zod and Ursa from eternal prison.
We pick up in present day West Africa, where an ethnic conflict between the fictional Ghuri and Turaaba clans is claiming lives (this conflict is very reminiscent of the Hutu and Tutsi wars in Rwanda). Clark Kent, a freelance reporter in his early twenties, arrives to cover the conflict, and to meet with the Ghuri representative and activist, Kobe Asuru. Later, Clark interviews the Turaaba representative Mr. Kebile who dislikes Kobe and opposes Ghuri rights. While protecting Kobe's sister Abana from a thrown bomb, he hears a commotion and speeds back to the rally where Kobe has already been stabbed. Enraged, Clark grabs the fleeing assassin and throws him into a wall, demanding to know who hired him. The terrified killer raises his arm—pointing directly at Rep. Kebile, who is incidentally surrounded by media. Kebile is besieged with questions and is later forced to resign. The time spent with Kobe Asuru in Africa causes Clark to decide to use his powers for the greater good of humanity.
Clark returns to Smallville, determined to learn more about his alien heritage. He tells his mother Martha that he wants to unearth his spaceship. He and Martha use the data tablet that came with Clark from Krypton to examine holographic records of Kryptonian history. Clark realizes the S insignia had great significance on Krypton and seemed to symbolize the Kryptonians' hope for a better tomorrow. He refuses to wear a mask while taking flight. Martha's solution is that only Clark's human half requires a disguise. She dresses him in professional, nerdy attire that stands apart from his usual look and gives him prescription glasses to wear. She promises they will refract light so no one will notice his startling blue eyes (which would otherwise give him away). Clark learns to slouch and act nervous and clumsy, to distance his civilian identity from tall, self-assertive Superman.
Meanwhile, Lex Luthor and his chief adviser at LexCorp, Professor Emmett Vale, unveil their "Orbital Defense System" to provide the world with much needed protection from the dangers that both Luthor and Vale adamantly believe is only a matter of time, alien invasion. Luthor, a brilliant astro-physicist, boldly declares, "There is something else out there. Someone else out there, and they are coming. Those unwilling to accept this, will simply be left behind." Reporter Lois Lane asks Luthor to comment on rumors of problems circulating the testing of this system, which Lex casually dismisses. Lois follows up with questions of LexCorp's alleged financial ties to Representative Keible, and the possible involvement in the civil war going on in West Africa. Luthor manages to distance himself from one of his former advisers, Representative Kebile, and his current problems in West Africa, Lex even coming off as a sympathetic figure to the people of West Africa. Luthor's "alien invasion" declaration is met with a lot of skepticism from the press, as well as other government and business officials. Among the people in attendance; Lois Lane, General Sam Lane, Dr. Amanda Waller, and Lucius Fox.
Clark travels to Metropolis to apply for a position at the Daily Planet. When he arrives, he finds robotic anti-terrorist helicopters criss-crossing the sky. Upon reaching the Planet building, he sees the publisher, Mr. Galloway, berating Jimmy Olsen for fetching him the wrong yogurt. Lois Lane appears and yells at Galloway for humiliating Jimmy. When Galloway storms off, Clark introduces himself to Lois and is immediately smitten with her. He finally meets Perry White for a one-on-one interview, but it does not go well. Moments later, a miniature robo-chopper hovering outside goes berserk and opens fire on the Daily Planet building. When no one is looking, Clark ducks out to change into his costume and flies off to repel the helicopters. When he rips a radio transmitter off one of the wrecked units, he uses his powers to trace the signal to the incomplete skyscraper in the distance: LexCorp. Superman has been saving lives and averting disasters in secret until this experimental robo-chopper forces him to expose himself to the public. He meets Lois Lane for the first time as Superman and both feel a connection to each other but before they can react to it, a mob surrounds them.
Superman bursts into Lex Luthor's office, just as Luthor is scheming with known Intergang associate, Bruno Mannheim. He tells Luthor he saw the signals and knows he sabotaged the Army choppers. Luthor is amused that he thinks anyone could possibly convict him on such evidence and demands to know who designed the technology that allows him to fly. At that moment, LexCorp's armored security barges in, with Lois and Jimmy right behind them. When Lois asks what Lex's connection is to Bruno Mannheim and Metropolis' new hero, Lex pretends to endorse the caped figure, saying, "He is a friend to Lex Luthor." The next day Luthor is ready with a cover story: a disgruntled Army employee was behind the attacks. LexCorp has stepped in to produce the robotic helicopters now that the Army's model has been recalled. But the LexCorp connection is an unprecedented black mark on Luthor's otherwise sterling reputation.
Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White assigns Lois Lane to get an interview with Superman. Meanwhile, Superman is all over Metropolis rescuing citizens and foiling plans of the local mob known as, Intergang, which is led by gangster Morgan Edge. After a series of failed attempts to interview Superman, Lois decides to take a gamble and plunges her car into the harbor. Superman arrives and takes her home. She finally has the scoop on Superman only to find out she was beaten to the headline by the new reporter, Clark Kent. Perry decides that Clark has earned his shot.
Luthor is again talking with someone via radio, angrily asking, "how long will it be before you get here?". A distorted, computer generated voice responds, "Patience. we're coming." Lex takes down a glass of whiskey, alone, as he can finally feel his plan coming to fruition.
Lois and Clark join guests at a party to be held on Luthor’s luxury liner. Upon arriving, they are entertained by Luthor in his private chamber on the ship. When Luthor insinuates his desire of Lois, the latter is offended having some knowledge of Luthor’s past. Lois refuses to be one of Luthor’s trophy wives and decides to leave the ship. She and Clark are then confronted by Turabban terrorists who promptly throw Clark overboard. As the terrorists are trying to control the hostages, Clark changes to Superman and lifts the liner ship which surprises everyone on board. This opens an opportunity for Lois to seize control and knock out the terrorists. Luthor then reveals that he allowed the terrorists to get on board just so that he could coax Superman to come and include him on his payroll. Superman refuses Luthor’s offer. Luthor confronts Superman and warns him of a day of reckoning.
Lois and Clark visit Luthor at the massive towers that form his corporate headquarters. Luthor presses a button on the console in his desk and the room transforms into a holographic theater. Luthor, alongside his chief adviser Professor Emmett Vale, asserts that he is first and foremost an astrobiologist, and describes many lucrative LexCorp inventions that were designed solely on his theories of possible space life and potential invasion. Lex claims to have had conversations with, and “seen with my own eyes other life forms”, for short glimpses on his technology, unfortunately always interrupted with static. Lex then pulls up images of Superman and makes an official statement; "Superman is not of this Earth. He is the first in a wave of alien invaders, sent to take control over the planet."
Clark reports Luthor's findings to Perry, who orders he write it up. Clark protests, knowing that the revelation that Superman is an alien will drive people away and points out that they have no real proof. Perry insists, saying Luthor is the leading authority on this matter, which is proof enough. When Superman now goes out to rescue those in need, people are too fearful to even go near him.
While sulking in an empty restaurant, Clark hears a commotion as a suspension bridge across town inexplicably blows up. Superman speeds off to reconnect the bridge cables, but another explosion rocks the bridge. In his office, Lex Luthor watches the disaster and triggers bombs along the support column, making it appear that Superman is the one tearing it down. As the finishing touch, a mechanical drone in the water aims weapons at Superman. From the sky flies Zod and Ursa, into the ocean after Superman. The kryptonian's destroy Luthor's mechanisms producing the radiation rays, and save Superman, taking him away to space. Zod gives Clark a greater history of his Kryptonian heritage, ultimately revealing that he once fought alongside his father, Jor-El before "his" betrayal. Zod claims there are more out there from his home, ready to join him, like they were ready to join his father before. Zod claims to have been sent here by the greatest mind Krypton's ever known to allow Kal-El the chance to redeem his father, and join forces. Zod exclaims, "All you must do is choose, and this planet will be ours!" Superman tells Zod, "No one man is meant to run that planet." Zod explains, "You will never be one of them. They will never accept you Kal El. To them, you are the enemy." Superman, Ursa, and Zod have epic battle in space, that ends with Superman returning to Earth not knowing where to turn, as he is considered a fugitive.
Phones are ringing off the hook at LexCorp, as Defense Secretaries from countries around the world are desperately attempting to obtain the latest in "Orbital Defense Security." After the recent events involving the "illegal aliens" participation in the destruction of the bridge in Metropolis. Not bothering with a phone call, instead deciding to show up in person is General Sam Lane. Luthor finds a minute between business calls to acknowledge General Lane, who insists on knowing everything Luthor knows about "these aliens." General Sam Lane, Lois' father, agrees to help Lex in exchange for weapons technology. Lex reveals that Superman is an alien.
Clark returns to Smallville after a long time away. His adoptive parents pick him up. Jonathan Kent tells him about Lana Lang’s engagement news. Later that night, Clark could not sleep when he went for a midnight snack, a “ghost” of Jor-El surprises him and touches him. Superman discovers himself to be on an alien planet where he encounters his biological mother, Lara. As the hallucination wears off, he is face to face with his old flame, Lana Lang. In a flashback, it turns out that on the night that Clark learned his heritage he went to Lana and revealed the truth of his powers to her. She confesses her feelings to him. She realizes that Clark can no longer belong to her, that he belongs to the world and this fact had hurt her. She had gone through a period of depression and finally accepts the fact. The next day, Superman thinks about what she said and starts wondering about where he truly came from. He goes to the location where Jonathan hid the rocket ship he was found in only to find that the ship is gone missing unbeknownst to the Kent’s. The hologram of Jor-El reappears and tells him to be silent and to learn. It appears that Superman is under some kind of poisonious attack but the Kents arrive in time and break it off. Superman flies away, realizing that it was not a mental attack but a download of knowledge of everything about Krypton into his brain. It is here he learns finally about his biological parents, where he came from, and the ability to access the "Phantom Zone",. Though he appreciates the knowledge he has been given, in the end, the information causes Clark to embrace his humanity ever more.
On the roof of the Daily Planet, Clark sees Jimmy on the ledge, and mistakenly thinks he's about to jump, They talk about feeling ostracized in Metropolis, and how Jimmy is thinking of returning to New York. Clark persuades Jimmy to stay, since he's his "only friend" in Metropolis. He lets Jimmy take his picture. The next issue runs with Lois's story and Jimmy's picture, naming him "Superman." Lex reading the story, is furious, and declares personal war on Perry White.
A fire in the Daily Planet’s main warehouse almost proves fatal, but Superman rescues them. Meeting up with Lois and Jimmy, Superman concludes the fire is arson, part of an attack on the Daily Planet. The fire was started by Intergang thugs on behalf of Luthor. Public opinion is wary of Superman, but in part due to the Planet’s articles, opinion is turning, and the Planet’s circulation is improving by 700%. Sam and his troops arrive at the Daily Planet, and orders it shut down until they can get definitive answers about Superman. Sam Lane reveals to Lois, Perry, and the Daily Planet staff, that Superman is an alien, and that they are here to stop him.
Clark takes Lois to lunch, where she continues to notice that he's not all he seems to be. Clark hears an explosion and leaves to become Superman. The explosion is Zod and Ursa returning to Metropolis causing destruction. Superman confronts Zod and works to protect the people in danger. Sam Lane arrives and accuses them of being illegal aliens and enemies of the state. "I want to know what your people want?!" Zod screams, "Absolute power!" and begins to "scream" everyone away. Superman continues to assist the people, as best he can, giving Sam the opportunity to order the Army to attack the bullets tear at their clothes, but nothing that causes Superman to experience pain. The Kryptonian villains continue to wreak havoc on army and people of Metropolis. Superman flies away to LexCorp and forces Lex to give him the coordinates of the origin point in space where Zod and Ursa became released in space. Superman lures Zod and Ursa into space at the coordinates supplied, and manages to return them to the phantom zone.
Superman comes to explain his intentions to the people of Metropolis and General Lane. General Lane orders Superman arrested, causing the crowd to turn on the Army, and Superman orders the crowd to stop, telling them that they, not the Army, not Lex Luthor, nor himself, are meant to be Metropolis's saviors.
Superman returns to LexCorp, where Luthor is feverishly trying to reconnect with the static images to Krypton, this time to establish direct contact. Luthor begins requesting to be sent weapons before the monitor begins showing the letters, "B-R-A-I-N-I-A-C." The letters appear over and over again, filling up the screen. The computer begins to meltdown, flashing visions of the imminent destruction of Krypton swirl on the screen, interrupted with static; back on Krypton, many years in the past, one of the Kryptonians points to the sparring adversaries and says he can see them on his viewing screen, and he wonders if they are real. A desperate Luthor screams out "No! I am real!... We can save each other!" We see a flash of Jor-El and Lara appear seconds after they have launched baby Kal-El and say goodbye to one another. An awestruck Superman realizes that is his name: Kal-El. Luthor attacks Superman from behind, telling him he's doing him a favor, it's agony to be alone in the world. Superman tells Luthor he wasn’t always alone, he made his choice, and punches him several times across the jaw. A bloodied Luthor lies defeated as Superman runs up and calls out something into the void; but the transmission is cut off too soon, and Superman thinks his parents never heard what he was trying to tell them as the images go to complete static. During the last moments of Krypton, Jor-El and Lara look at a viewing screen with a static image crackling from it. A figure, barely visible and wearing the S-shield on his chest, says, "Mother... Father... I made it." The images return to just static. Superman leaves Lex and tells him Metropolis doesn't belong to him: "You don't own us." Lex objects, since Superman isn't from Earth. Superman replies, "This is my home," and leaves.
In the aftermath, The Daily Planet celebrates becoming the top selling newspaper in the city, and Luthor faces indictment, but with his team of attorneys, and Professor Vale taking the fall, Lex isn't expected to see jail time. Superman visits Lois atop the Daily Planet building and thanks her for making him feel like he belongs there. He starts the Planet’s rusty globe spinning again. Lois asks, "Are you a man or an alien?" His response is, "I'm Superman." Superman flies into the heavens . | |
