Stormwatch #1 – Amid the hundreds of super powered beings on the planet, there is an obvious food chain. You’ve got men and women capable of saving entire planets single handedly along side street level folks who are perfectly happy handing a mugger his teeth. Stormwatch presents us with a team of super powered individuals that have been saving our lives for hundreds of years and are so clandestine; you never knew you were in danger. This is not your average “men in tights” book. Characters include Engineer, the Eminence of Blades, The King of Cities, The Projectionist, Jenny Quantum the Spirit of the 21st Century, Midnighter alongside folks with “normal” sounding names like Apollo and our buddy, Martian Manhunter (who it is stated is a member of the Justice League.) As was the tradition in the book “The Authority”, from which the bulk of these characters come, the scale of this story is IMMENSE and we are promised by the publishers that things happening here will always echo out into the rest of the universe. Sort of makes you sit up and pay attention! Unfortunately, considering the odd nature of some of the power sets here and the grandiose names of characters, it’s all going to take some getting used to and I’m afraid those readers who just came for an old fashioned super brawl may abandon ship early on. I found the characters very charismatic, displaying a sort of flippant attitude and extraordinarily self confidant stance that might remind you of Doctor Who in action. I’ll also point out there are a handful of visuals in this book that will make you nudge whom ever is closest to you and say “Check this out!” This book makes an impression right out of the gate and after you get past the attitudes, it is exceedingly entertaining, amusing and a treat to the eyes amid a sea of boring, cookie cutter comic art. Stormwatch takes center stage and proves it is deserving of this position. Once again, I’m presented with material I didn’t think was my “speed” and was won over. http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/09/06/review-the-new-52-so-far-by-paul-nomad/

- A close second and a true achievement, though, is Stormwatch #1 from Paul Cornell and Miguel Sepulveda. Already a fan of both creators, it's great to see them step into a new level of confidence. Within the first half of this book, the team perfectly and seamlessly integrates the WildStorm universe of characters into the DC Universe. They make a perfect place and reason for Stormwatch's existence. They integrate WildStorm themes seen primarily in other books like Planetary. They create a huge backdrop to the last several hundred years of the DCU. They even take individual characters like Martian Manhunter, and make them more badass than ever before (not to mention explain why MM is with this squad of mostly WS folks in an expert manner). Add to all of this a fast-paced story with more than a couple fun twists, plus Sepulveda's artwork being about 10 orders of magnitude more fluid, detailed, and striking than anything he's ever drawn, and you have one incredible focal point for the new DCU. And yes, this is the book that the world will revolve around.

- Stormwatch #1 by Paul Cornell and Miguel Sepulveda.
Possibly the most disappointing of the first week of titles. A title steeped in Warren Ellis, and Micah Wright Stormwatch, this feels like the blandest possible reinterpretation of those comics. The Stormwatch that in many ways made Warren Ellis’ name challenged the very basis of superhero comics, this feels like the weakest possible version of The Boys. A bunch of characters, some known, some new, that stand around saying that they are not superheroes, but not acting in any differently. It’s not just been neutered, it’s been castrated.
The book does confirm that even if DC is just being relaunched, Wildstorm is being completely rebooted. Nothing that happened… happened. Jack Hawsmoor with speedy tracks on his hands noe as well as his feet, is part of a Stormwatch that protects the Earth from alien menaces, rather than protecting it from itself. The politics that always made this book and its spinoffs stand out has been removed, along with the snark and mocking attitudes. This is DC’s “Stormwatch Done Right” and there’s nothing to it.
New characters The Projectionist and The Eminence Of Blades are media manipulator and swordsman respectively. With Jack Hawsmoore Martian Manhunter and The Engineer, trying to recruit Apollo in Russia and fight a sentient Moon. And Jenny Quantum is one of hundreds of “century babies” being cared for another new team member, Adam. Ticking boxes, but ultimately dull. And in a comic pitching the Moon vs the Earth, that’s really hard.
The art is also dull too, a collection of unconvincing faces, and a rather boring way of portraying the incredible, with only a scene with a transformed Martian Manhunter to save it. There is an interest in that we discover that Stormwatch is the present version of whatever Demon Knights were, when that comic launches. And some continuity will tie in with the new Superman #1. There are teases as to what may be behind Stormwatch, as well as a major threat in the future – possibly the kind of thing the Strange Woman was talking about. But nothing really sticks and for a first issue of Stormwatch that’s a sin.
I don’t know if this is a case of too many editorial cooks dulling what should have been a spicy, tangy broth, or if it’s an inability to live up to what has come before. And it’s not the worst comic DC published today. But it’s the one I am most disappointed by. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/09/06/tuesday-comics-reviews-stormwatch-batgirl-batwing-animal-man-detective-comics-action-comics-men-of-war-swamp-thing-jli-green-arrow-omac-hawk-dove-static-shock/ Bon, bon.

Strange. Stormwatch absolutely blew me away. I felt pretty much the exact opposite of everything you wrote, Rich, but there you go. Definitely a tie with Action for best new title for me (nothing neutered or castrated that I could see, simply fresh and different). This was always going to be tricky – a relaunch of a long-running, well-known title that essentially launched Warren Ellis’ career, and which takes the controversial core team from Wildstorm comics (better known as the Authority) and drops them down in the DC Universe. Considering that two members of this team are, essentially, a gay version of both Superman and Batman (here known as Apollo and the Midnighter), this was certainly a risky and intriguing move by DC, and what we get is Stormwatch, a comic that’s big, bold and energetic, even if it (understandably) can’t live up to the title’s long, complicated and controversy-heavy history. For newcomers, Stormwatch are the people in the shadows, who’ve been looking after the DC Universe for much longer than these newly arrived cape-wearing wannabes, and Cornell pulls off some great cinematic moments here, while introducing a bizarre and intriguing threat. The character interplay is well-executed and often fun, but it’s also sometimes dragged down by Sepulveda’s art, which feels a little too stiff and doesn’t give the story the right level of visual impact (especially in the final splash page). There’s room for growth and improvement, but this is a promising beginning… http://www.schizopolitan.com/comics-review-the-dc-new-52-week-2-action-comics-animal-man-batgirl-batwing-detective-comics-green-arrow-hawk-and-dove-justice-league-international-men-of-war-o-m-a-c-static-shock-stormwatch-swamp-thi/

| Ah yes yes trés good stormwatch, trés intriguant.
