Just got back from a screening. It's great, but it's not perfect either. A few parts felt rushed. I can't give it a nod over TDK. I think 85/100 is where it's at. Action is on the "dude wtf (in a good way)" level, something you'll have to see more than once. Some parts could've been explained better or been different I think. I leave that down to the plot which isn't perfect.
It's a great first Superman and better than SR by a longggggg shot. Cavill did well. Snyder be praised. The man can do action. No idea where they'll go from here.

Of all the characters, she had the most liberties taken.
Tonally, Man of Steel deviates itself from Nolan's Batman films and plays out much more like a film that belongs in the Marvel-verse. This is a Snyder and David Goyer film, definitely not a Nolan film. The religious motifs are undertones, not overtones like they were so proudly displayed in the last Superman film.

Although I would have much preferred Snyder use the farm boy entering the big city approach to Superman rather than the alien finding himself storyline, I felt Snyder did a good job assimilating the two with the former most certainly to be played out in subsequent sequels given the ending to the film.
Overall, as far as recent comic book films go, I'd give this a solid 8/10. A little ahead of Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man 3 which I would give all around a seven, and about on the same level as other films I'd give an eight to such as Iron Man 1 and Batman Begins. My only chief complaint is that I wish they would have sacrificed some of the extensive action sequence at the end to give room for a little more personal, character interactions to compliment what was truly an amazing cast. Story was good although a little quickly paced, surprising for a 150 minute movie, special effects were choppy on occasion but state-of-the-art for the most part, and Hans Zimmer's score was great! It would be a shame if this only leads up to two more sequels (Hollywood needs to stop glorifying the trilogy!). Here's to hoping this is a pillar that WB/DC builds off of! | |

From a forum-I was blown away. The Krypton scenes blew my mind. Russell really made Jor-El his own and distanced the character from Brando in the same way that Shannon's intensity towers over Stamp's dated performance. Well acted, amazing pace, seeing Superman FIGHT onscreen for the first time in my life. The 3D was tastefully done. The climax of the film - Supes v Zod - was everything I could have wanted. Zach Snyder just did the impossible. He really did create a Kal-El that a man in his 30s like me could identify with the same as the five year old in front of me in the theater with a red cape.
I'll save the spoilers for a few days from now when everyone has a chance to see it. I never use the term because it's so passe at this point but the only way to describe this film is epic. Science-fiction epic. | |
