Zach Snyder's Man of Steel not only manages to successfully reboot the Superman series, but it manages to make The Avengers and Avatar look like a child's play toy in comparison. Now that we've seen what big, modern Superman action looks like, hopefully the second film will spend more time fleshing out its characters and less with suits punching each other. Just like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight [what?] before it, Man of Steel is a great introduction that understands the appeal of its titular character and is headed towards becoming legendary.

Forget what you thought you knew about Superman, "Man Of Steel" is smarter, more epic in scale and way more kick ass than all previous Superman movies. "OMG moment" after "OMG moment" will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final "OMG moment" that will instill a new respect and yes Fear of Superman.

This is not your father's Superman, that said it's not your 10 year old's Superman either. This is a darker, dare I say, "more real Superman" flawed in human ways and conflicted in ways we've never really seen in this character on film. Switching up and modernizing the mythos of Superman was a huge risk for writer David S. Goyer and director Zack Snyder, that pays off in epic and intense proportions without losing the essence of the beloved classic origin story.

You'll notice right away that this is a super hero movie wrapped in a sci-fi flick which given that Christopher Nolan is co-writer jives perfectly with the already established Dark Knight universe, giving plausible explanations for fantastical things and believability to unbelievable visuals, explosions and one of the best fist fights in movie history.

If you had any concerns about casting Henry Cavill as Superman, fear not Cavill will forever own this role. Like Daniel Craig and James Bond. Cavill brings his beard and rugged good looks to the role that will for sure land him on the cover of every Style, Fashion and Lifestyle magazine for the next several years.

Kevin Costner is the Johnathan "Pa" Kent you'd expect to father a hero like Superman, played thoughtfully and convincingly. Michael Shannon is exceptionally cast as the vengeful and desperate General Zod, his menace and anger leave a lasting impression. The rest of the supporting cast, including Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russel Crow as Jor-el and Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van are also brilliant in their respective re-booted and re-imagined roles.

I can't wrap up my review without mentioning the emotionally grand score by Hans Zimmer that really plays beautifully in the flash back and battle scenes. In 2013 "Man Of Steel" is the summer blockbuster to beat, epic, explosive, dramatic, thrilling and most importantly fun!

Okay, I was hoping to be on my laptop with a real keyboard for this but I never got the chance, so I'll share my reactions via iPhone...

Some of the spoilerless stuff I can share -- the audience just seemed to love this. People applauded after it was done and there was a real buzz going on after the movie. General audience reaction seemed to be strong; people laughed when they were supposed to, got excited when they were supposed to, etc.

I was there with my childhood best friend Dave, Bishop Hammer and my wife. Everyone thought it was good; the only caveat I heard was that my wife thought some of the action scenes lasted too long. Bishop and Dave thought it was one if the best superhero movies they've ever seen.

As for me? I really enjoyed it but it wasn't the Superman movie of my dreams -- but I am bringing some baggage to the table. I'm not mind-reader, but I think Rafael and Monk will enjoy this movie and Swanderson and Allen may not. I actually think Fraxon might be surprised -- I wouldn't be surprised to hear him say he liked it. It was a crowd-pleaser for sure.

Cavill may not be up there with Reeve but he's as close as I can imagine anyone getting. He definitely captured some of the charm and warmth Reeve brought to the role. Basically, Reeve is Sean Connery and Cavill is Daniel Craig. He is superb in the role.

Bottom line -- I think I still like Superman: The Movie more but I think most people will prefer this new one. I can truly say that this movie makes Superman feel like a fresh, modern character that feels like he could have just been created 5 or 10 years ago. It never felt like we were watching a nostalgia act -- this is definitely a Superman for the modern generation.

For me, I give it 4 stars out of 5. Recommended.

Oh, and if this says anything -- except for my wife, all of us are chomping at the bit to see this again. I predict at least two more viewings for me. I wouldn't be surprised if I break my Iron Man record of 5 theater viewings with this puppy.

Oh, and I can safely say that this is by far the best movie Zack Snyder has ever done. I mean, it's not even terrible, so that gives it a huge advantage over his other films.

I wish he had gone this direction tonally with the Watchmen adaptation.
