- Jeremy Irons to star in “The Borgias” TV show
Sat Jan 9, 2010 5:08pm EST
LOS ANGELES, Jan 9 (Reuters Life!) – Scheming Italian renaissance family “The Borgias” will be the subject of a U.S. television series next year, with Oscar-winning British actor Jeremy Irons playing the starring role. Robert Greenblatt, entertainment chief of Showtime, told TV reporters on Saturday the cable channel had ordered 10 episodes of “The Borgias” to be directed by Neil Jordan, who won a screenwriting Oscar for his 1992 film, “The Crying Game.” “The Borgias” will air in spring 2011 and replace Showtime’s hit steamy English period drama “The Tudors,” whose fourth and final season starts in April. The Borgia family, one of whose members became Pope Alexander VI in 1492, was notorious for murder, rape and corruption in 15th century Italy and has inspired a number of books, plays and films. Irons, 61, won an Oscar for his role as socialite Claus von Bulow in the 1990 movie “Reversal of Fortune.” (Reporting by Jill Serjeant; Editing by Peter Cooney) ——————————————————————————————————– THE WORLD’S MOST NOTORIOUS DYNASTY – THE BORGIAS – COMES TO SHOWTIME Network Greenlights Epic Drama Series Starring Oscar(R) Winner Jeremy Irons and Executive Produced by Academy Award(R) Winning Director Neil Jordan and Veteran Film and Television Writer/Producer Michael Hirst LOS ANGELES, CA, January 09, 2010 – Showtime Networks has ordered 10 episodes of a one-hour drama series based on the infamous Italian Renaissance family The Borgias, it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. Oscar(R)-winning actor Jeremy Irons will star in the epic drama series as Rodrigo Borgia, the cunning, manipulative patriarch of The Borgia family who ascends to the highest circles of power within Renaissance-era Italy. Additionally, Academy Award(R) winning director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) will create and executive produce the series as well as direct the first two episodes. Veteran film and television writer/producer Michael Hirst, who created, wrote and executive produced SHOWTIME’s original series The Tudors, will serve as executive producer/writer. “Having blazed a trail with the award-winning THE TUDORS, we wanted to continue to offer our audience a period drama as wicked, witty, and utterly compelling — and that’s what THE BORGIAS will be,” said Greenblatt. “I can guarantee you’ve never seen a family quite like this before, nor could you make up the outrageous twists and turns of their epic saga if your life depended on it. The directorial mastery of Neil Jordan along with Michael Hirst’s flair for bringing historical dramas vividly to life for a contemporary audience will make THE BORGIAS unlike anything else on television.” THE BORGIAS will be a complex, unvarnished portrait of one of history’s most intriguing and infamous dynastic families. The series begins as the family’s patriarch Rodrigo (Jeremy Irons), becomes Pope, propelling him, his two Machiavellian sons Cesare and Juan, and his scandalously beautiful daughter, Lucrezia, to become the most powerful and influential family of the Italian Renaissance. And all that power and influence eventually leads to their demise. As Machiavelli once said about his friends, the Borgias, “Politics have no relation to morals.” Jeremy Irons is one of the most celebrated film, television and stage stars of the last thirty years. He has won the Academy Award (R) (Reversal of Fortune), a Tony Award(R) (The Real Thing), two Emmy Awards(R) (Elizabeth I, The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century), two Golden Globe(R) Awards (Elizabeth I, Reversal of Fortune) and a Screen Actors Guild Award(R) (Elizabeth I). His list of memorable films and television include; Brideshead Revisited, The Mission, Dead Ringers, Being Julia, The Merchant of Venice, Lolita, and Appaloosa. Last season he appeared on Broadway in Impression opposite Joan Allen. He is currently nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG Awards for his performance in Georgia O’Keefee. The series will be produced as a Canadian-European Treaty co-production in a manner similar to the production of THE TUDORS. It will go into production this spring for a debut in early 2011. source : http://jeremyirons.net/2010/01/09/jeremy-irons-to-star-in-the-borgias-for-showtime/

- 4 MARCH 2010 – Director Neil Jordan talks with the Irish Film and Television Network about ‘The Borgias’ and Jeremy Irons:
IFTN: … can you tell us how things are going with your upcoming project ‘Borgias’ with Jeremy Irons?
NJ: It’s brilliant! I have never done anything like this before but the cable series are getting so good, if you look at ‘The Wire’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Dexter’ and obviously ‘The Sopranos’ it’s becoming clear that some of the best writing and film making the United States is happening inside those shows and every director who does the same thing that I do are all gravitating towards them. They seem to be so consistent and are all done by different directors. Where ‘Borgias’ is concerned, this is a script I have had for a long time and Dreamworks said “Why don’t we make a cable series out of it” so I said “Yes, let’s try and do that”. Since then Showtime have taken it on and its going to be a very interesting journey it will be really exciting and it’s a new one for me.
IFTN: And we can expect Jeremy Irons to be as excellent as always?
NJ: Yes, I just did some tests with Jeremy and he looks marvellous!!

- SHOWTIME has cast English actress Joanne Whalley as the female lead in its Renaissance crime drama The Borgias.
Whalley will play Vanossa, mother of the Borgia children who were fathered by Rodrigo Borgia (Jeremy Irons) before he became one of history’s most infamous popes. Vanossa once was a courtesan with a disreputable past. Whalley has played several roles on the small screen, including the title character in the 1994 TV miniseries “Scarlett” and the 2000 TV movie “Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.” British actress Holliday Grainger has leapfrogged over star names to take the part of Lucrezia Borgia. The 21-year-old Mancunian will play opposite Jeremy Irons and Derek Jacobi in the ten-part series The Borgias, which starts shooting in Budapest in July. Some episodes will be directed by Neil Jordan, who also wrote the screenplay. Years ago, he wanted to make a big-screen version. Executives for the U.S. cable channel Showtime met with other actresses in Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris and Rome and screen-tested scores of young women – some of them big-name stars – before they decided Holliday was their ‘chosen one’. Lucrezia is a star-making part. She was supposedly the most vilified woman in history. One Italian historian called her ‘the greatest whore there ever was’ and a femme fatale of the highest order. Others assert she was unfairly pilloried, perhaps for the sins of her father and brothers. Jeremy Irons will play Lucrezia’s father Rodrigo Borgia (who later became Pope Alexander VI). Francois Arnaud has been cast as Lucrezia’s brother Cesare Borgia, while Colm Feore will be Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, who later became Pope Julius II. Actor Sir Derek Jacobi will play Cardinal Orsini in the first two episodes. Jacobi’s previous film credits include Henry V, Gladiator, Gosford Park and The Golden Compass. Francis Ford Coppola modeled the storyline of Godfather III on the Borgias, and found their ruthlessness and Machiavellian scheming translated perfectly to his 20th-century tale about the Mafia. The Canada/Hungary/Ireland co-production is scheduled to premiere in 2011 on CTV and Bravo! in Canada and on Showtime in the U.S. Merci à jeremyIrons.net

- Production details for The Borgias:
Hungary’s profile as a film center recently got a lift when Budapest was chosen as host for “The Borgias,” a sumptuous 10-episode television show that will be presented on the American cable channel SHOWTIME in 2011. The series stars Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia, the patriarch of the powerful and corrupt 15th-century Italian family who became Pope in 1492.
Bruno Peter Gyorgy, a producer at Korda Studios in Budapest, where “The Borgias” is being filmed, said the $1.6 million cost of reproducing Renaissance Rome on a back lot in Budapest — complete with the entrance to St. Peter’s, a 15th-century palace and the garden of Vatican City — was still lower than filming on location in Rome.
Filming begins this summer.

- Dutch actress Lotte Verbeek will play opposite Jeremy Irons in the upcoming Showtime mini-series The Borgias.
Verbeek will play Giulia Farnese, one of Rodrigo Borgia’s young mistresses. Farnese was known for her beauty and was an inspiration for many of the 15th century masters. It is said that Raphael’s portrait “Young Woman With Unicorn” was inspired by Farnese. According to Verbeek’s agent Jeremy Conway, casting was decided because of Verbeek’s strong resemblance to portraits of the real-life Guilia Farnese. Last year the 28 year old won the best actress prize at Locarno for playing opposite Stephen Rea in Nothing Personal (a film by Urszula Antoniak). Verbeek was also picked as a European Shooting Star at the Berlin Film Festival in February (a programed aimed at finding new talent throughout Europe and bringing them mass attention) . Verbeek is currently in Budapest filming The Borgias. Filming began on 23 July and will continue into December. merci à jeremy irons.org
