Did anyone see some sort of Inception viral commercial last night? Someone on Nolan Fans posted about one:
Quote: o I'm watching "40 year old virgin" on USA network at about 2 am, when I see a commercial come on. I'm with some friends and not really paying attention to the TV at first, but i still notice that it's a very vague commercial, with various text like "DID YOU KNOW THE GOVERNMENT CAN ACCESS YOUR MIND?" playing over a simple scene of a wall in some city, with city noises playing in the background. I don't remember much about the first half because I wasn't really paying attention, it wasn't until the last two messages that I actually took notice of what was on screen as the strange commercial had finally captured my interest:
"KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AND YOUR MIND CLOSED
TEXT MINDCRIME TO #### FOR MORE INFORMATION"
I say #### because I didn't catch the number unfortunately.

Anita 18 du shh revient d'une expo hier au ciné Gear expo ou elle a entendu parler Wally Pfister et Lee Smith (le monteur de Nolan).
Quelques légers spoilers et beaucoup d'info interessantes

No super-juicy spoilers this time like Nurse Joker, although in terms of action set pieces, Wally said
Spoiler:
that the Calgary ski resort scene and the rotating hallway scene are actually intercut with each other. Certainly sounds like one insane sequence if that's the case!
Also,
Spoiler:
the climax involves a lot of lightning and storm clouds so that definitely means
we haven't been given a lot of the climactic stuff in the trailers since we haven't seen any of that.
Lee Smith said it was a challenge editing Inception since it was a "very complicated movie" and you can't give the audience more than they can chew or else they'll tune out. In terms of feel, Wally said that it was more emotionally charged than Chris's earlier films since he's grown emotionally as well, now being the father of 4 kids. (He joked that Emma would consider Chris "one of 5 kids." )
In terms of the current state of the film, Wally said they were color-timing the last two reels (out of 7), which contains more VFX than all of Nolan's other films.
It was also really interesting hearing Wally (and his crew, whom he brought up on stage with him) talk about Nolan's work methodology. Efficiency is the name of the game on a Nolan set. ("If you have to be on set at 7am and you're there 5 to 7, you're already late!") The VFX was already fleshed out when Chris did his first cut of the movie 10 weeks after principal photography, so there's no need to rush at the end. Inception came in under schedule, and under budget.
He still really likes shooting spontaneously, and since they were working with multiple formats (65mm mainly for wide shots, 35mm for closeups, and 1000fps high-speed on different cameras), they had to have all the cameras ready at all times in case Chris wanted to try a take with another camera. This meant dragging around 16 carts and 2 camera trucks all the time. The spontaneity also meant no gyros or cables during the ski resort action scene. They had a guy follow the actors/stuntmen with a camera on his shoulder and the focus puller with him too. Wally really raved about that and said there was some awesome stuff we had never seen before in that scene, but the ski DP acted like it was no big deal.
They are the "only act in town" still cutting the negative directly, and one of the few not doing a digital intermediate at all. (Like last time, Wally had his pre-coffee rant on digital. This time it made a little more sense since on his latest project, he pretty much had a war with the client about NOT doing a D.I. He won that battle, but if he claimed he'd retired if he was forced to do a D.I. He gave some fairly interesting examples as to why D.I.s were a waste of time and money, and I can elaborate on that if someone wants me to.) Nolan is very adamant that the VFX work look like the dailies, because if they stray too far from that lighting, it's very hard to get it to look the same as film when they're doing photochemical color-timing. He'll even have it sent back and tell the artists to look at the original dailies if they go too far.
As for 3-D, Wally's "personal opinion" (which he "got in trouble for last time" ) was that he's "not a big fan of 3-D. Maybe it's because I'm a drunk and I get nauseous watching it...It's a great thing to watch while dropping acid." In terms of technical things, he feels makes the film too dark and since it doesn't help the storytelling for feature films, then it's a distraction. He also added that it often doesn't feel real since it often creates false depth.
One audience member asked Wally about how working with Nolan developed his storytelling abilities for film, and he had a really cool story about working on Memento. For one of the hotel room scenes with Leonard, Wally wanted to take a wall of the set down so he could shoot wide and use a long lens, "because it would look good." Nolan said no, that he felt it was wrong for the story. The audience needed to be in the room with Leonard, and would feel that something was off if the camera was physically out of the room. They actually had a bit of an argument over that, but Nolan won and Wally realized that even though Nolan was a relative newbie to this film thing (Memento being Nolan's 2nd film and Wally's 15th or so), that he could learn a lot from him. __________________
