- ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Breaks Records in Overseas Debut
Captain America: Civil War starts its run at the global box office with a $200 million head start from 37 territories a week ahead of its North American debut.
The latest flick from the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened in around 63% of the overseas marketplace this weekend, crushing several box office records in key markets –including the biggest opening weekend of all time in Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.
Disney estimates the opening at -5% behind last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, +26% ahead of Iron Man 3, +26% ahead of Avengers, and +157% ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier when taking into account the same territories and their respective exchange rates over the past year. Key markets in Europe has seen a currency devaluation in that time period, causing a potential disconnect when looking at historical U.S. Dollar comparison between individual titles.
The weekend’s overseas numbers do not include several key markets, including China, Russia, Italy, and Argentina. Civil War will debut in those markets simultaneously with North America next weekend.
A regional breakdown for the overseas opening weekend is included below:
Asia-Pacific
South Korea is the film’s top overseas market, where it recorded the #3 industry opening weekend of all time with $28.9 million. Australia also put up double digits in the million with a $10.9 million debut, the third biggest opening weekend for a Disney release. Taiwan brought in $8.1 million, while the Philippines recorded its biggest opening weekend of all time with $7.5 million. Japan was the only overseas market where Civil War didn’t claim the top spot, but the film was nevertheless able to finish its opening frame there with a $7.1 million haul. Other strong regional debuts came from Hong Kong ($6.8M), Thailand ($6M), and Malaysia ($5.1M).
Latin America
Mexico recorded the #1 industry opening of all time with a $20.9 million take, the weekend’s second largest sum from all overseas markets. Brazil also saw Civil War establish the same record with a $12.3 million take.
Europe
The United Kingdom experience the second biggest opening day and weekend of all time with Civil War, which grossed $20.5 million to come in third among all overseas markets. France recorded the biggest opening day of the year en route to a $10.1 million bow. Germany also performed exceptionally well with an $8.1 million take, the market’s biggest 4 day opening weekend of 2016 thus far. Spain’s $4.4 million debut is the market’s second biggest 3 day opening of 2016, behind fellow Disney release The Jungle Book.
IMAX
IMAX screenings contributed $9.6 million of the weekend take from 205 screens worldwide. That amounts to a $47k per-screen average, nearly doubling its predecessor’s $25k PSA on IMAX screens over the same weekend. Civil War expands to 750 additional IMAX screens with next week’s release in North America and China.
IMAX is reporting a stellar per-screen average results across its key markets this weekend:
Hong Kong IMAX: $112K (4 screens)
Sweden IMAX: $100K (1 screen)
Taiwan IMAX: $75K (8 screens)
Vietnam IMAX: $60K (1 screen)
Netherlands IMAX: $60K (6 screens)
Australia IMAX: $58K (5 screens)
France IMAX: $55K (6 screens)
Indonesia IMAX: $54K (5 screens)
Philippines IMAX: $53K (8 screens)
Upcoming Markets
Captain America: Civil War will reach theaters in Italy (May 4), Russia (May 5), Argentina (May 5) and China (May 6) by next weekend. Additional markets opening next weekend also include Croatia, Czech Rep, Greece, Hungary, Lebanon, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey, New Zealand, India, Trinidad, and Uruguay.

- Box Office: 'Captain America: Civil War' Nabs 'Avengers'-Sized $200.2M Overseas Debut
Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, which pits Steve Rogers against Tony Stark/Iron Man and features a whole host of fighting superheroes, earned $200.2 million in its five-day overseas debut. $9.6m of that came from IMAX for a $47k p.s.a (or double the 25k p.s.a. for The Winter Soldier‘s IMAX debut). I will avoid making superhero fatigue joke for at least this week.
It won’t open until next weekend in America, but much of the worldwide moviegoing community got their initial sampling of Walt Disney’s Captain America: Civil War starting this past Wednesday. The much-anticipated comic book superhero sequel debuted April 27 and expanded through the week into around 63 markets. It earned $14.9 million in total on its first day, and it upped its total to $38.7 million worldwide heading into the weekend and then followed it up with a $45m Friday for an $84m three-day total.
It will expand to most of the rest of the world over the next week with high-profile debuts in America and China May 6. Like most of the Marvel debuts, each one, in fact, dating back to Iron Man 2 back in 2010, the film held off the would-be biggies (China, America, and Russia) although Japan was included in the initial offering this time.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opened with $201 million on its first pre-U.S. debut a year ago. The first Avengers earned $185.1m over its pre-U.S. overseas debut four years ago. Iron Man 3 made $198m in its first overseas weekend while comparatively Captain America: The Winter Soldier snagged a $78m overseas debut in March of 2014.
It is the 14th film in history (mostly recent history) to top $200 million in its overseas opening, making it the 14th biggest debut of all time, with the always present caveat that every film opens in different territories (and a smaller/larger percentage of the world market) at various times. Of note, Avengers 2 didn’t open in China until its third weekend.
The original Avengers opened in most of its territories by the end of its second weekend (when it smashed the U.S. opening weekend record and debuted in China and Russia). It opened with $207 million in America and an additional $157m overseas and brought its worldwide cume to $641m worldwide at the end of its 12th day. Avengers: Age of Ultron added a $191m domestic debut to its second weekend of worldwide release and ended its 12th day of global play with $630m worldwide.
But regarding the initial overseas debuts for the recent Marvel movies have ranged anywhere from 24%-29% of the overseas total (Iron Man 3 and Iron Man 2) to just 15%-16% of the overseas total (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy). The Avengers earned 20% of its $895m overseas cume in its first weekend of release while Avengers: Age of Ultron earned 21% of its whopping $946m overseas take on its first weekend of play. So, with the caveat that this is somewhat speculative, let’s play fun with math…
If Captain America: Civil War is going to play like an Avengers film here and abroad, then let’s presume it will play like one regarding legs as well. As such, a 20-22% figure gives it an overseas total of between $909 million and $1 billion. For the record, I am assuming that the film’s China total is closer to Avengers: Age of Ultron ($240m) as opposed to The Avengers ($86m) or The Winter Soldier ($115m). Or if it plays more frontloaded overseas (24-29%), we’re looking at a foreign cume of between $690m and $834m.
I think the 15%-16% comparison won’t apply, but that would be a $1.25 billion to $1.33b overseas cume. Let’s offer a (very speculative) $175 million to $215m domestic debut and 2.4x weekend-to-final multiplier (think Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Avengers 2 which did 2.35x to 2.45x their opening weekend totals) for a $411m-$527m domestic total. Of note, will have three weeks until X-Men: Apocalypse, while Avengers 2 hit Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road at the end of its second week.
So the nutso crazy best case scenario would be a $215 million debut with a 2.45x weekend-to-final domestic multiplier for a $527m domestic total along with a Guardians of the Galaxy-ish overseas run for a $1.33b foreign cume for an absurd $1.857b worldwide total. Conversely, a $175m U.S. debut with a 2.35x multiplier for a $411m and a $690m overseas cume gives it a $1.101b worldwide cume. That would be a tremendous result, but I’d probably have to spend time defending it accordingly.
If we’re playing “safe middle ground,” think a $190 million debut for a $455m domestic total and an $833m overseas gross (24%) for a $1.288 billion worldwide total. Yes, these are highly speculative numbers with a huge unknown (the U.S. debut figure), but with a $200m overseas debut and Marvel’s comparatively leggy history compared to other openings of this size, there aren’t many scenarios where this movie crashes and burns. Now having said that the well-reviewed (and likely to be well-received) film is still a hit even if it doesn’t clear the magical $1 billion mark.

- ‘Captain America: Civil War’ To Break Out In The U.S.; Looks To Defeat ‘Ultron’s $191M+ Debut – Box Office Preview
Summer starts on Thursday night at 7 PM with Disney’s Captain America: Civil War set to send seismic waves through the box office. This is a Marvel superhero clash that fanboys and crowds have been waiting for, and unlike Warner Bros.’ Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Disney already has critics and audiences on their side.
The Rotten Tomatoes score off 115 reviews for Captain America: Civil War is at 94% fresh, which is higher than both 2012’s Avengers (92%) and last May’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron (75%). Pair this with the buzz emanating out of Disney’s hugely successful CinemaCon screening and industry estimates have Civil War conquering No. 1 between $190M-$200M at 4,200-plus theaters. Given how non-exact tracking is in predicting these big openings, should Civil War‘s dust settle at $175M, the Mouse House will be very happy.
Among the top three superhero debuts at the domestic box office, Disney/Marvel owns all of ’em with Avengers ($207.4M, A+ CinemaScore), Ultron ($191.3M, A CinemaScore) and 2013’s Iron Man 3 ($174.1M, A CinemaScore).
Already, Civil War has bagged $224.3M overseas with the Avengers movie invading China, Argentina, Italy and Russia this weekend. Here in the U.S. and Canada, Civil War will have something stronger than the vibranium steel alloy in Captain America’s shield: 3,300 of its venues will be in 3D, along with 378 Imax, 480 premium large-format and 161 D-Box locations. In addition some 20% of colleges are off Friday, a figure that will swell to 85% by the fourth frame of Civil War.
The Burbank-based studio is hoping for a Thursday night preview in the mid-$20M range for the Russo brothers-directed sequel. Among superhero titles, Warner Bros’ The Dark Knight Rises holds the Thursday night record with $30.6M (but off of midnight shows), followed by Batman V. Superman ($27.7M) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27.6M) which both started at 7 PM.
While Fandango reported last week that Civil War was besting the advance tickets sales of all previous Marvel movies, today the online movie ticket sales agent says Civil War is breaking the record for all superhero movies in the company’s 16-year history, including BvS. Currently Civil War reps 90% of its weekend tickets sale.
While these superhero movies are always top-heavy with males, the Marvel films with each release further broaden their demos, increasing their reach with women and families.
For many fanboys, Civil War is Avengers 3 with Captain America and Iron Man drawing lines in the sand over how the superhero team should exist going forward and whether governments have a say in its supervision. Tony Stark drags young Spider-Man into this fight. Adding that character into the Avengers fold is a big deal for Marvel fans and marks the partnership between Sony (which has dibs on Marvel’s Spider-Man property) and Disney/Marvel going forward on the next cinematic iteration of the character; his next movie being Spider-Man: Homecoming set for July 7, 2017.

En présumant autour de 200M US + 125M China + 35M new int (India, Russia, Argentina, Italy, Malaysia ...) + 90M holdovers on devrait être entre 710/730M après dimanche (et ça me semble être des prévisions conservatrices). Batman V Superman sera battu avant même le week end suivant.

- The 2016 summer box office season officially kicks off this weekend with the 13th chapter of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Our analysis:
Captain America: Civil War Disney / Marvel
PROS:
The sheer amount of success and strong reception enjoyed by most Marvel films is an automatic selling point here. Based in part on the very popular Civil War comic story line, fans have been eagerly awaiting the Tony Stark vs. Steve Rogers showdown for years. Social media activity is through the roof, currently trending on par with or ahead of all other MCU titles — Age of Ultron included — at the same point before release on both Twitter and Facebook. Stellar reviews and early word of mouth have perfectly complemented another strong marketing campaign from the studio. In terms of being viewed as a “sequel” to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, that film’s excellent reception should only serve as goodwill for this entry. The addition of Robert Downey, Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man to this film’s cast — along with the ensemble of characters itself — should help the film feel and perform more like an Avengers sequel than a standalone character entry. The aid of Mother’s Day falling on this Sunday should be an additional boost to ticket sales. Fandango reported earlier this week that the film surpassed Batman v Superman, Age of Ultron, and The Dark Knight Rises as the company’s top pre-selling superhero movie ever. Disney-at-large is currently riding an unprecedented wave of commercial and creative success, and this looks to fall in line with that trend.
CONS:
There are practically no downsides with Civil War — or Disney or Marvel right now, for that matter. This is easily the safest box office bet to hit the market since Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
