IT box office reaches monstrous $51 million on Friday

New Line Cinema‘s IT earned a monstrous $51 million on Friday, which marks the largest Friday ever for a September release and also the largest Friday opening for the studio. The film now has a chance of opening with more than $100 million for the weekend at the North American box office. Of the $51 million, $13.5 million came from Thursday previews, which is the largest Thursday pre-show ever for a horror movie, the largest for an R-rated movie (beating Deadpool‘s $12.7 million), the largest pre-show for a September release, and the biggest for New Line. The film also set a record for the number of locations it’s playing at for an R-rated movie with 4,103 theaters.

Other sites report slightly higher numbers (The Wrap makes it $123 million) but all estimates have it over $115 million. The film also reportedly made an extra $62 million overseas, making a global opening of $179 million.

According to Deadline, Tuesday was also a banner day for the film, as its $11.4 million in domestic ticket sales set a record for the biggest September Tuesday ever. The publication pointed out that the number is so impressive that no film in October has ever pulled in that much money on a Tuesday. In fact, IT’s Tuesday gross is on par with some of the all-time biggest Tuesdays in November, which belong to the likes of Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which made $15.96 million on Nov. 26, 2013; Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 ($12.1 million on Nov. 25, 2014); and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 ($11.77 million Nov. 20 2012).
